Jared was born and raised in Coral Springs and graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He grew up in a household committed to promoting the values and principles of the Democratic Party, influenced by his father’s work as a Democratic Party Committeeman before his death from pancreatic cancer earlier this year. Jared followed his interests in politics and public service to The George Washington University, where he received a degree in political science with a focus on public policy, before attending law school at Nova Southeastern University.
While in college, Jared applied for and was granted the opportunity to work as an intern for Vice President Al Gore. The experience taught him about the political process and paved the way for him to grow more involved in Democratic politics. He held roles in Democratic campaigns, and in 2008, served as one of Barack Obama’s electors in Florida.
While in law school, Jared was elected to the Parkland City Commission and began working on forward-thinking solutions to problems large and small. Before widespread texting-while-driving laws were being discussed, for example, Jared fought for a local law to ban the practice. During his six years on the City Commission, he was known for his pragmatic focus on public safety and commitment to environmental issues.
When state legislative districts were redrawn before the 2012 election, Jared received calls from local leaders and community members asking him to consider a run for the State House. He declared his candidacy and won the election, beginning a six-year stint as a State Representative. In the Legislature, Jared successfully fought for measures to make our schools and community safer, implement climate resiliency programs, protect animal welfare, support the State of Israel, and enact reforms to Florida’s justice system.
In the wake of the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Jared stepped up to support the families of his alma mater. He spent countless hours with the families impacted by the tragedy. Jared was the champion of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, the most comprehensive gun violence prevention, school safety, and mental health bill ever passed in Florida. He continues to stay in touch with MSD families to lend his support, and many have endorsed his campaign for Congress.
Jared was a major voice fighting against Ron DeSantis’s election, but when DeSantis was elected, he asked Jared to become Florida’s Director of Emergency Management. The Florida Democratic Party and Democratic elected officials urged him to take the role and bring Democratic values to a state agency for the first time in 20 years. During his tenure, Jared was responsible for disaster mitigation and recovery, including helping communities after hurricanes and the delivery of recovery funds to counties and cities affected by disasters.
As Director of Emergency Management, Jared faced the worst case scenario: a global pandemic that threatened the lives of every Floridian he was dedicated to protect. Jared stepped up to the task. He directed the establishment of testing sites, designed the vaccine distribution network, provided masks and PPE to nursing homes and hospitals, distributed meals to tens of thousands of Floridians, and administered other essential logistical systems to help us get through the pandemic. He personally oversaw 250+ vaccine events at Black churches and vaccine distribution for HUD housing, immigrant communities, assisted living facilities for seniors, and Holocaust survivors. Plain and simple, Jared’s leadership saved lives.
Jared currently serves as a Broward County Commissioner. In this role, he has worked to improve affordability, invest in infrastructure, expand public transportation options, enhance public safety, and address quality-of-life issues on behalf of constituents. He and his wife Leah have two sons.
Jared’s lifetime of public service has prepared him to be an effective advocate for our community. He is ready to serve us as a Member of Congress.
