John and his wife Leslie are the proud parents of three wonderful children – Carolyn, Laura, and Raymond. John is a life-long resident of East Hartford and a proud product of public housing, public education, and public service.
Connecticut Roots & Upbringing
John grew up in Mayberry Village — a public housing project in East Hartford — with his seven brothers and sisters. His dad Raymond, a World War II veteran, worked three jobs to support the family, including as a firefighter at Pratt & Whitney.
His mom Pauline was a legendary community activist, breaking barriers as one of the first women to serve on the East Hartford Town Council. His Dad’s military service, and his Mom’s activism and public service, motivate and inspire John every day.
Early Public Service
His strong desire to better his community, as well as his experience as a high school history teacher, led him to successful tenures serving on both the East Hartford Board of Education and the East Hartford Town Council.
John was then elected to the Connecticut State Senate, where he quickly became known as an effective leader and unifier. After being named Senate President, he spearheaded a transformative agenda on behalf of working class families, including the nation’s FIRST family and medical leave act.
Congressional Service
As Congressman for Connecticut’s 1st, John has continued to deliver for Connecticut’s families and working-class residents. He has delivered real results and real solutions on big issues – like Covid-relief, infrastructure, and health care reform – and on local issues – helping over 17,500 constituents with problems involving veteran’s affairs, social security, immigration, and more.
As we work to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and pursue economic recovery, John will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of his constituents, so that we emerge stronger than before.
