What is a step well? A step well is usually a natural spring reached by descending a set of steps. The beyond description Raniki Vav/Raniki Vav Step Well is the ultimate in step well building. The approach gave no clue as to what awaited with only small walls visible but when we rounded the corner and got our first look...In--cred--ible to the max!

This fabulous (I can't come up with enough superlatives) step well was built by Queen Udayamati in the 11th century when Patan was the capital of Gujarat. Raniki Vav descends seven levels below ground. Each and every level is decorated to the max with carvings on walls, columns and ceilings.

According to ancient legend, there are possibly two more step wells, just as glorious, still hidden! A must see in Gujarat. Don't you agree? And, it has recently been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site!
