What is simple is not always easy. For Evangeline Zhu, the journey of dance has been an exploration: How much control can dancers have over their limbs? Just how malleable is the human body? 

After joining Shen Yun, she began to learn the skill of shen-dai-shou (literally, “the body leads the hands”), a simple but never easy technique that enhances the dynamism of performing arts. Through the knowledge imparted by Shen Yun’s Artistic Director, she entered a new realm of dance. 

Integrating shen-dai-shou into classical Chinese dance gives life to a greater force of beauty; and this beauty, at its peak of splendor, returns to simplicity. The mastery of shen-dai-shou demands powerful inner strength to materialize the immaterial. With the body leading the hands, with the heart driving emotion, the stars of Shen Yun discover what it means to dance with heart and soul, with mind over matter, and reach new heights of self-mastery.
