CBT Nuggets trainer Ben Finkel explains the basics of the Google Kubernetes Engine structure. In order to master deploying a cluster and using it via the internet, you should start with a solid understanding of the concepts and terminology of Kubernetes and Google Kubernetes Engine.

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) enables you to create a Google-managed Kubernetes deployment. The great thing about running a GKE deployment is that you don’t have to worry about any of the infrastructure or underlying apps or operating systems that keep the scaling and app delivery happening. GKE manages everything that’s outside of the software inside the container. After you deploy containers to an artifact registry, GKE pulls them down, deploys the containers to pods and handles the rest behind the scenes. You don’t do the autoscaling, load-balancing, you don’t select the number of pods or handle the allocation or distribution of pods across nodes in the cluster.

First off, concepts and definitions. A cluster is the entire group of computers running the GKE deployment. A cluster is made up of one or more control plane computers – the boss of the cluster. The control plane computer has multiple nodes, which are running actual pods. Nodes are virtual machines run by GKE inside the cluster. A pod is the actual workload getting deployed. The terms pod and container don’t mean the same thing, but they can often be interchangeable. That’s because ideally there’s always one container per pod. The deployment is what controls the actual use and delivery of those pods – it knows where to get the container image from and runs the actual execution. Last, the service is what’s used to expose the pods to the internet so that they can be accessed non-locally.
