Razor Sharp Spears,  Battle-Hungry Berserkers and Impenetrable Shield Walls: Viking warfare was fearless, bloody and brutal. Whether they were a small band of warriors raiding defenseless monasteries like Lindisfarne or armies of up to 6000 Vikings charging into bloody battles against the Anglo-Saxons the Vikings mostly followed the same tactics and rarely took prisoners. 

The Vikings to the world by surprise and won many of their battles. But what made them so victorious. A lot of there success was a result of their intimidating fighting tactics. 

Surprise: By using the element of surprise Vikings could attack their enemies before the had a chance to prepare for battle. This was very effective in early raids of Britain and Ireland when smaller band of Vikings arrived.

Fear: Many people feared the Vikings and their brutal attacks. The Vikings used this to their advantage. They banged their shields and roared battle cries to intimidate their enemies before battle. 

Shield Wall: The shield wall was an effective tactic that helped the Vikings defend themselves against spears and arrows. By interlocking their shields, they could create a shield wall that made it difficult for the enemy to break through. 

Boar Snout: This was a method used by the Vikings to break through their enemies shield wall. The Vikings interlocked their shields to form a pointed shape. They then charged at the enemy to break their defenses. 

Berserkers: The Vikings had certain warriors who wore only bear or wolf skin and charged into battle in a ferocious frenzy called berserkers. They fought with rage and certainly intimidated the enemy.
