Gravity affects. Earth by warping space and slowing down time -- time runs slower in high gravitational fields than in weak ones, according to Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity. The difference on Earth is very tiny, but for the first time, it’s been measured by putting atomic clocks on fictitious mountaintops and valleys and measuring the difference in the flow of time between the two.

Physicists have now managed to measure this difference in the time it takes light to traverse a millimeter -- which sounds easy, but it is extremely hard! 

In this video, I discuss the fascinating experiment and the results of a paper posted earlier this month to the scientific preprint server arxiv.org, where researchers from the lab of Jun Ye, a physicist at JILA in Boulder, Colorado, measured the difference in the flow of time between the top and the bottom of a millimeter-high cloud of atoms.

The work is an important milestone (millimeter stone?) toward studying gravity's intersection with quantum mechanics, two theories that are notoriously incompatible.
