Have you ever seen a piece of fabric being woven by hand? Or perhaps you've done some weaving yourself? Either way, if you have, you've also seen a weaving loom- the tool that transforms yarn into cloth. Weaving is a precise craft involving each individual thread being aligned into perfect placement. As you might imagine, this can be difficult and time-consuming. But in this video, master weaver Melissa Weaver Dunning demonstrated weaving on Mount Vernon's 18th Century Loom and how the fabric was made in the colonial era. Dressed in a period costume and bare feet, Dunning made the weaving process look much easier than it probably is.

One of the most common and ancient techniques in the world is weaving. Besides its practical use, weaving also has a significant artistic significance. In ancient times, fabrics were used to spread images and symbols, and they were also the single characteristics of people, culture and social status.

It's hard to tell exactly when weaving started, as it's usually fragile and can deteriorate easily. Some believe that the concept of interlacing emerged from bird nests, which inspired the invention of weaving. It involves the creation of a fabric that's made up of multiple threads. Weaving process involves creating a fabric by combining a pair of materials: a warp and a weft. The longitudinal or long warp yarn is held in tension while the transverse weft is inserted over and under it.

The Loom is a symbol of cosmic creation and the structure upon which one's fate is weaved. In Greek mythology, Arachne was changed into a spider by the goddess Athene, who was envious of her ability to weave. In Maya Cultures, the goddess Ixchel taught the first woman how to weave at the beginning of their civilization.
