I once was asked to evaluate some high school students presentations with former Ohio Governor Bob Taft. The students were given a time limit to speak- and most abided by the rules. But, when I cut someone off- who was already well over their limit, I was the one in trouble.
So, I asked for a show of hands- how many kids had someone in their immediate family in prison or jail right now (and, yes, you should know the difference). About half the hands went up. How many had extended family in either- we're up to about 75% of the hands. Bob Taft didn't know how to make sense of this. If you asked this question in Oakwood- no one would raise their hands even if they did have someone locked away.

The question is- are there things we could invest in that generate better outcomes for all? I'm sharing a few examples of justice run amuck - and how we could do better.
Building a bigger jail isn't the answer.
