In this video, I’ll answer the question – what is McCarthyism?  The term McCarthyism is well-known to a lot of older Americans, especially those who grew up during the 1950s and early 1960s. This rather intriguing sounding word sent waves of fear and panic across the United States before ultimately becoming synonymous with character defamation.  So, what exactly is McCarthyism? 

McCarthyism was coined to refer to the activities of Joseph R. McCarthy, a senator affiliated with the Republican Party who represented the state of Washington from 1947 to 1957. 

He served at a time when the threat of Communism was all-pervasive, with the American public warned that Communists could be lurking anywhere. They were cautioned that even their teachers, college professors, and neighbors could be foreign agents sent to undermine the country’s freedom and its democracy.
