In this episode of Let’s Teach, I’ll explain the ugly truths that inspired the Squid Game series.  At the heart of the Squid Game plotline is a fatal competition in which members of the lower class participate in deadly versions of children’s games in the hopes of winning a life-changing fortune. Reminiscent of The Hunger Games, this narrative is inherently situated to highlight the massive wealth inequality between those playing the game and those viewing and facilitating the game.

Squid Game explores the actions human beings are willing to take when faced with the devastating realities of financial desperation. In the case of the show, they succumb to literally competing for their lives against hundreds of other contestants, knowing all but one will die in pursuit of instant wealth and stability.
