First things first: recession is defined as "a significant, widespread, and persistent slump in economic activity" on Investopedia.

From the peak of the previous expansion to the trough, economists can determine the duration of a recession.

Recessions induce a drop in economic output and employment, and this decline can sometimes feed on itself. For instance, when consumer demand falls, businesses often respond by laying off workers, which in turn reduces the purchasing power of ordinary people and further dampens demand.

Recessions have happened regularly in the United States, thus it is not new. To be sure, recessions are less common and don't last as long as they used to.

A turning point is often experienced by the economy, followed by a slowdown. Since 1857, the United States has had an average of 17 recessions, but the six recessions that have occurred since 1980 have lasted on average less than 10 months each. In October 2022, reports stated that analysts from investment advising firm Raymond James maintained that the U.S. economy was not in recession. Even if two consecutive quarters of negative growth match the technical 
definition of recession, the investment advisor believes that the economy is not in recession because of the many positive economic signs.
