One of the challenges of a permaculture garden is that you must keep close to nature, without upsetting the established routine of your urban environment. In other words, you must "use the land how it was meant to be used." Permaculture, which is actually the gardening of organic food in an urban setting, requires you to think about where your food comes from and then find ways of integrating it with the soil in which you grow plants. This means that any perishable items or materials you use must be stored carefully and within limited time periods in temperature-controlled environments. In this article I'll show you how to get started with your own Permaculture vegetable garden.
The first thing you'll need is a companion plant to grow alongside your Permaculture vegetable plants. In this case, I'd recommend two plants: one for the use as a green roof over a vegetable patch; and another as a small ground cover planted between the rows of seedlings. Be careful not to crowd these plants together too much or they will become too bushy to support the growing needs of both plants. The important thing to remember is that you must ensure that each plant has room to grow, thrive, and even flower!
Next, you'll need to determine which plants will be best for the space that you have available. Some companion plants to consider are hardy annuals that are maintenance free and fairly low maintenance themselves, such as creeping thyme, crabgrass, and lava. I prefer to plant annuals because it's relatively easy to maintain them and because they don't take up much extra space once planted. However, you can always plant a smaller, perennial plant as a companion plant if you have room.
One important thing to remember is that all vegetables should be planted in organic soil. No organic matter should be added to the soil to promote growth of the plants. Also, make sure that your vegetable plants do not compete with one another for nutrients and water so they can all thrive.
Another important tip to consider is that you should only plant one vegetable companion plant at a time. You'll want to have a number of different plants ready to use if the first one doesn't survive. It is also important to make sure that the plant you select is a good match for the climate and soil conditions you currently have.
If your climate is mild, you should consider planting three companion plants: one culinary herb, one nursery-grown plant, and a variety of flowers. For most climates, the culinary herbs are probably going to be a better choice because they are more versatile. Culinary herbs are especially good to have around because they can be used in a wide variety of meals including soups, stews, salads, dips, and even ice cream.
If your climate is quite warm, or you have a lot of clay soil, then you might want to plant a garden of nurseries-grown vegetables. These plants can provide the nutrients that your main crop needs. On the other hand, if you live in an area with very cold temperatures, you should probably stick with companion plants that are cold hardy and can tolerate cool weather. Some examples of this type of plants include Sweet Corn, Potatoes, squash, and cucumbers. By growing plants that can tolerate different temperatures and different types of precipitation, you'll be able to spread your production out evenly during the growing season.
Permaculture is really a great way to grow a diversified organic garden. This will ensure that you are getting all the vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients your food needs. Even better, Permaculture has been proven to grow plants without much of the use of synthetic pesticides or chemicals. This is a big advantage because it means that you won't be harming any of the natural creatures that live in your garden when you're growing vegetables. You can also rest assured that your vegetables are naturally healthy and pure.
