In this video I am planting up a multi level hanging basket. These baskets have holes along the sides which are often used to create hanging strawberry planters. I wanted to have a hanging basket with some massive petunias. Usually the vigorous petunias like the ones I used, supertunia vista bubblegum and supertunia vista silverberry from Proven Winners, will be the sole plant in their basket because of their bushy and full growth. These big petunias don't leave much space for other plants in hanging baskets unless they are massive baskets. By using a basket with holes in the sides, it leaves the top available for planting other annuals. I used sunimpatien compact tropical rose as my centerpiece. This sunimpatien has gorgeous variegated foliage with lovely deep pink flowers. Behind the impatien I used a 'butterfly pink' pentas for a little more interest and to help attract more pollinators. Along the sides I alternated snow princess alyssum with purple wave petunias. Purple petunias in general usually are very fragrant, and fragrance is a quality lost with most of the self-heading petunias. I also put a Hawaiian punch colocasia in the center.
