Greetings, friends and bird lovers.  For the last few days, about 200 Red-Lored Parrots have decided to roost in a dead tree near us.  These guys are beautiful and very chatty!.  

Notice how their vocalizations become louder and louder, then they suddenly burst forth from the tree and circle around, then return to the tree.  

I'm no parrot expert, but this gathering seems to be a mating opportunity.  They appear to be pairing off, preening and getting to know each other.  

These birds are highly intelligent.  Each has it's own name, given to them by their parents in the nest.  Cornell has a great article about this here: https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2011/07/parrots-learn-their-names-their-parents.    

They're great mimics, too.  I've heard them imitate chickens dogs, cats, crying babies, human laughter, kissing, and many other forms of human speech.
