Alcatraz was a federal prison located on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, California. It was in operation from 1934 to 1963 and was known as the "inescapable prison" because of its location on an island in the middle of the bay, strong currents and the freezing waters surrounding it.

Alcatraz was originally a military prison before it was converted to a federal prison in 1934. It was used to house some of the most dangerous and notorious criminals of the time, including Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Stroud, also known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz."

Life on Alcatraz was extremely harsh, with prisoners being subjected to strict rules and a rigid routine. The prison was designed to be escape-proof, with high walls, barbed wire fences, and armed guards stationed around the island. Despite these measures, there were several attempts to escape, but none of them were successful.

But, There was a famous escape from Alcatraz prison on June 11, 1962. Three inmates, Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris, managed to escape from their cell by digging a tunnel through the walls of their cell and fashioning dummy heads to fool the guards.

The men then used makeshift rafts to cross the San Francisco Bay. While their escape was one of the most dramatic prison breaks in history, their fate remained unknown for decades, and it was never proven whether they survived their escape. Authorities have always presumed that they probably perished in the cold waters of the bay.

There have been several movies made about Alcatraz prison. Here are some of the most well-known ones:

"Escape from Alcatraz" (1979) - directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood, this movie tells the story of Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, who famously escaped from Alcatraz in 1962.

"The Rock" (1996) - directed by Michael Bay and starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, this movie is a fictional action-thriller that takes place on Alcatraz Island, where a group of rogue soldiers take control of the prison and threaten to launch a chemical weapon.

"Birdman of Alcatraz" (1962) - directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Burt Lancaster, this movie is based on the true story of Robert Stroud, a prisoner who became an expert in ornithology while serving time at Alcatraz.

"Murder in the First" (1995) - directed by Marc Rocco and starring Christian Slater and Kevin Bacon, this movie is a courtroom drama that tells the story of a prisoner who was driven to insanity by the brutal conditions at Alcatraz.

"Alcatraz: The Whole Shocking Story" (1980) - directed by Paul Krasny and starring Michael Beck, this made-for-TV movie is a dramatization of the history of Alcatraz, from its construction to its closure.

"Alcatraz Island" (2018) - directed by Jin Feng and starring Liu Kai-chi, this Chinese movie tells the story of a Hong Kong police officer who is sent to Alcatraz to investigate the disappearance of a group of Chinese tourists.

These are just a few examples of the movies that have been made about Alcatraz prison.

Alcatraz was closed in 1963 due to the high cost of maintenance and the deteriorating condition of the prison. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and is operated as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Visitors can take a ferry to the island and tour the prison to learn about its history and the lives of the inmates who were once housed there.
